Q&A with Paige McKenzie

New York Times Best Selling Author Behind the Sunshine Girl Series

Q: How would you describe The Haunting of Sunshine Girl book series to those who haven’t read it yet?
A:I would describe it as Paranormal Activity meets Gilmore Girls. Sunshine is a pretty typical girl… until she isn’t!

Q: How did you get the idea to write a book series?
A:I first told the story on YouTube. After a literary agent approached me about writing a book, my publisher came on board and it turned into a trilogy. Now it’s headed to the small screen as a TV show!

Q: Where did your interest in the paranormal come from?
A:When we moved into our current home, some strange things happened while we were working on the house. The TV would turn itself off and on, we would hear strange noises, that sort of thing. So when the idea for the YouTube series came up, it was a good fit!

Q: When did you learn that you had a passion for writing?
A:I always liked English class in school and I did fairly well but I didn’t discover how much I love writing until I started working on the first book. Now I write all kinds of different things, not just Sunshine stuff.

Q: What’s more fun: writing a book or making a YouTube video?
A:Well making a video is certainly easier! I really love the literary world. The people, the passion and so much to read!

Q: Are your parents supportive of what you do?
A:My entire family has been so supportive from the very beginning. Whether it’s slamming a door for a video or being a ghost or reading and giving me feedback on stuff I write, or simply driving me around, they all have contributed so much to the world of Sunshine! It’s actually why my second book is dedicated to them!

Q: Did you ever imagine that your books would become so popular?
A:I’m a pretty big dreamer so it’s safe to say, yes! I mean I’m the girl that has her Oscar speech all planned out. I’m thrilled that people find the books worth reading. But my favorite is how many kids have told me it was a gateway book for them. Maybe they weren’t strong readers before but now they love to read. That makes every struggle all the more worth it.

Q: What advice would you give to other teens trying to follow their passions?
A:Be brave and bold! So often it seems like the world tries to shut down dreamers. Stand tall in your belief that you have something to share. No matter what it is.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A:Spare time is a rare luxury these days but whenever I do have a bit of time I’m usually in my art studio. I love to create things. I’ll kinds of things. Three-dimensional art, sketching, collage. Anytime I can work with my hands is a good time! I also have been binge watching Orphan Black the last few weeks. That show is ridiculously good!

Q: What’s in store in the future for Sunshine Girl – do you ever see a movie in the works?
A:I do think at some point there will be a movie based on my adventures but first it’s going to be a TV show, starring me! I can’t give too many details about it yet other then we’re hoping for a fall 2017 release.
