Q: When did you decide to start your blog?
A: I started my blog as an outlet for writing and my love of fashion, nearly six years ago!
Q: What do you typically blog about?
A: Over the years, the focus of Hey, it’s Jenna has moved from fashion and “outfit of the day” style posts to a more mom-friendly site. Today, you can scroll through, and find snippets of our daily life, along with highlights of our favorite products and brands. You know, the things that make life with three kids easier and a lot more fun!
Q: How many children do you have and how old are they?
A: My husband and I have three girls (he is super outnumbered!) Peyton’s sixth birthday is coming up, London is two and a half, and Adaline is 14 months old!
Q: What did you do before you became a blogger?
A: Before I was a blogger, I was a Broadcasting major – so you could say I always loved telling stories. I actually worked at a completely unrelated desk job, until Peyton was born, and I was able to stay home full-time with her! I now balance being a full-time mom with writing and blogging.
Q: What are some of the topics you cover in your blog?
A: Scrolling through my blog, you’ll find easy (but yummy) weeknight dinner ideas, fun DIY projects, lots of holiday fun, some mama fashion here and there, lots of gift guides and roundup-style posts (like: what’s in my diaper bag). I like to think there’s a little something for everyone here!
Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a mommy blogger?
A: I would have to say hands down, the best part of being a mommy blogger is being able to connect with so many small shop owners, who I am lucky enough to call my friends! Sharing about their brands, and watching them grow is so fun. I love tuning into Shark Tank, and seeing someone who I’ve connected with years ago when she was selling on Etsy!
Q: What advantages come with being a mommy blogger?
A: The biggest is being able to stay home, and work with my kiddos! And sharing 10,000 pictures of my kids and calling it “work” – since I was spamming my Facebook friends with pictures of Peyton since she was born! I also love being at the front lines for new products and launches.
Q: What advice would you give to first time moms?
A: Oh, gosh. I think the biggest bit of advice I would give to moms is to take everyone’s advice with a grain of salt. What works for someone might not work for someone else. So don’t stress, and don’t take life so seriously! And my favorite one-liner I was told when I had my third was “comparison is the thief of joy” – I shrugged it off at the time, as unsolicited advice, but it is SO true. Stop comparing your children to each other, or to others, and just enjoy them as they are now! Because you’ll blink, and they’ll be bigger and you don’t get that time back.
Q: What do you do when you’re not blogging?
A: When I am not blogging, I am usually in yoga pants, playing princesses on the floor or watching Moana for the hundredth time! My husband and I play soccer together once a week, and we always make sure we have time for a date night every week (even if it’s just a quick dinner).
Q: What does your family like to do for fun?
A: In the summers, we are outside 90% of the time. My husband golfs and our oldest is so excited to be taking lessons this summer! I mentioned above, but soccer is a biggie for us all! We have a large koi pond in our backyard, so most evenings, we have a bonfire, and let the girls feed the fish. Music is always playing, and the windows are always open!
Interview with Jenna McFarland, Founder of Hey, It’s Jenna
Jenna McFarland began Hey, It’s Jenna as a creative outlet for writing and sharing her love of fashion. When she transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom, fashion took a backseat to mom life. Life got crazy when she and her husband decided to grow their family. The McFarlands live on two acres with three daughters, two dogs, and have lots of fun. They take birthdays and holidays VERY seriously, play soccer, make lots of cupcakes, love to get dressed up, and are mildly obsessed with braiding hair. Jenna invites you to follow them on their journey!
