What are your best tips for balancing work and family?

“I just embrace the Happy Chaos of being a Mom in business and resist from finding that mirage called “balance”. Usually once things appear to be calm and balance, a storm arrives.”

“I think universally we need to know work-family balance means something different to everyone, and that’s okay. For me, it’s getting rid of the superwomen idealism and focusing on things that are truly important to me. Undistracted quality chatter at the dinner table, bedtime routine and time with special friends in our life are front runners for me. I also try to share of the moment details from my work world with my husband and kids so everyone’s in the loop on what’s happening. I’m a business owner, and work is really an extension of my family”

“It’s not easy launching a new company, working a “real” job, having a working spouse, and trying to raise two kids. My number 1 tip is,get to work early. I’m lucky in the fact that I’m able to work from home and I leverage this to my advantage. I wake up at 5:00 each morning and work until 7:00. The kids know that Daddy is working when they wake and right at 7:00 I’m on breakfast duty while my wife gets ready for work. I can get an hour and half of undisturbed productive time to either tackle the big project of the day or catch up on all the little things like emails, scheduling etc. I have the time from 7 to 8 to help get the wife and kids out the door and then it’s back to work. Because I work early that means most days I can stop earlier to help take kids to scouts, dance, or just do something fun for an hour or so after school. Pro tip: Get a coffee maker with a timer. Knowing there is hot coffee ready makes it so much easier to get out of bed.”

“It’s so easy to want to invest time for work you are so passionate about and for the legacy you are setting up for your family. Work/family is a hard balance. My kids are small enough that routine at night time is really important, so I try to make sure we stick to it, and I work after they have gone to bed. Prioritizing things I can do well and delegating out things that others can do to help also gives me more time to spend with family.”

“As a mother and business owner, the most important thing for me is to find a balance between the quality time I can give to my kids, while also striving for greatness in my work. Both need time, but in different ways. It is my job to make the time for both, and make sure that whether I’m with my kids or my employees, I am present.”

“I find it necessary to compartmentalize my time as a work from home mom. I carve out hours to work, maximize that time, and do my best to focus on my family outside of “work hours”. With 3 young children, I find my productivity increases and my kids are happier if I don’t blur the lines between working and parenting. It takes a lot of self-control but entrepreneur moms have a lot to juggle on every front!”

“That is a great question, schedule time in your mind for both, Put the phone down, and be present with the family, Everything can wait to make your quality of life better at home and with the family.”

“This one is a constant work in progress for me. I’m a stay-at-home mom of three boys, ages 2, 4 and 6 and work from home as a Baby and Child Sleep Consultant and managing our Consulting team. I love my work, and I don’t have clearly defined hours or days of work, so it’s easy to constantly be doing a little work here and there. Despite loving what I do, it does start to feel “heavy” sometimes and that’s when I know things are out of balance. Here are some things that have helped me: I use the Do Not Disturb feature on my phone to protect my evenings with my children and husband. I can still check my phone if I need to, but it doesn’t notify me and I try to set it aside for my evenings. Doing family suppers each night. No matter how busy the day, this is key for us all to connect. Not opening any work email until I get my first cup of coffee in the morning. Sleep! Early bedtimes keep our kids well rested, making all of our lives easier. It also gives me uninterrupted time with my husband each night. Connecting and investing in our marriage each day gives me energy for the next day and is an essential part of our family thriving!”
